Bosch and Continental cover a lot of the market, but several other manufacturers fill in the rest. Delphi, Marelli and Denso each run significant numbers of vehicles, and knowing them completes the picture of who makes the ECU in your car.
Delphi
Delphi (with roots in the former GM components division) produces ECUs found across a range of vehicles, particularly some PSA, Hyundai-Kia, Ford and Renault applications. Its diesel and petrol units are a regular sight, and like any maker they come with their own families, protections and methods. Delphi is a name worth recognising when a unit isn’t Bosch or Continental.
Marelli
Marelli (long known as Magneti Marelli) is especially associated with Italian manufacturers — Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia — but appears elsewhere too. Its ECUs, including the well-known IAW and MJD (Multijet Diesel) units, run many engines from the FCA/Stellantis world and beyond. If you work on Italian cars, Marelli will be familiar territory.
The ECU maker often follows the car’s origins — Marelli on Italian engines, Denso on Japanese ones. The badge hints at the box inside.
Denso
Denso, closely tied to Toyota, is a major presence on Japanese vehicles — Toyota, Lexus, Mazda and others — and appears on some European applications too. Denso ECUs have their own architecture and characteristics, and they’re the family you’ll most often meet when working on Japanese engines.
Why coverage varies
Because these makers are less universal than Bosch, tool and file coverage for them can be more specific. That makes correct identification even more important: knowing you have a Marelli MJD or a Denso unit, not just “a diesel ECU,” is what points to the right approach and the right file.
