On the petrol side, two Bosch families dominate the modern era: MED17 and the newer MG1. If your car is a turbo petrol from the last fifteen years, one of these is very likely running it. Here’s what they are and how they differ.
MED17: the petrol counterpart to EDC17
MED17 is Bosch’s petrol ECU generation, the gasoline equivalent of the diesel EDC17 and from the same era. “MED” reflects its management of direct-injection petrol engines with electronic throttle. It became the standard across a vast range of turbo petrols — VAG’s TFSI/TSI engines, BMW, Mercedes and many others through the Euro 5/6 period.
What MED17 manages
MED17 handles the demands of modern direct-injection turbo petrol: precise fuelling, ignition timing, boost control and the emissions side. It’s the platform behind a lot of the turbo petrol performance gains people seek, because its boost and timing maps are where a careful Stage 1 finds its headroom.
MED17 is to petrol what EDC17 is to diesel — the defining ECU of its generation, and the one behind most modern turbo-petrol tuning.
MG1: the newer generation
MG1 is Bosch’s more recent platform, appearing on newer petrol engines (and MD1 on the diesel side). Built on a more powerful microcontroller, MG1 brought stronger protection and newer architecture. It’s found on the latest generation of cars, and its protection levels mean reading it can require more advanced methods than the older MED17.
Why the generation matters
The jump from MED17 to MG1 isn’t just a version bump — it changes how the ECU is accessed and protected. Newer MG1/MD1 units with the latest protection (including the well-known TPROT levels) need current tooling and methods. Identifying whether your car runs MED17 or MG1 tells you a lot about what the job involves.
The bottom line
