Spend time around ECU tuning and three words come up constantly: Damos, A2L and “map packs.” They’re about making sense of a file — turning a wall of numbers into labelled, editable maps. Here’s what they are, and the honest note about licensing.
The problem they solve
A raw ECU read is just binary data — millions of values with no labels. Somewhere in there are the fuelling, boost and timing maps, but nothing says which is which. Damos, A2L and map packs are different ways of providing that missing labelling, so a tuner can find and edit the right tables instead of guessing.
Damos and A2L
Damos files (originally a Bosch concept) describe the internal structure of a calibration — where maps live and what they represent. A2L is a related description format used in measurement and calibration, mapping variables to memory addresses. Both, when available for a specific ECU, let software like WinOLS display a file as fully labelled maps rather than anonymous data. They’re the “legend” to the file’s map.
A Damos turns a wall of numbers into a labelled atlas. It doesn’t change the file — it just tells you what you’re looking at.
Map packs and reference data
“Map packs” are collections of map locations and reference data that help identify tables across many ECUs. Combined with experience, they speed up the identification work that underpins clean tuning. The quality and accuracy of this data matters — bad references lead to mis-identified maps, and mis-identified maps lead to bad files.
The licensing reality
Here’s the honest part: this data has real intellectual-property weight. Original-equipment Damos and reference data are licensed material, and “free” bundles floating around grey-market tools sit in murky territory. Professionals who care about doing things properly use correctly sourced data — both because it’s the right thing and because accuracy and accountability come with it. Free isn’t the same as clean.
