ECU Reference Number: The Proven Way to Crack Any Unit

Look at an ECU and you’ll see a string of numbers that mean nothing at first glance. But those references are precise identifiers — and learning to read them tells you a great deal about the unit. Here’s a plain-language guide to ECU reference numbers.

The OEM part number

Every ECU carries an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number — the manufacturer’s own reference for that exact unit. On a VAG car it might start with a number like “03L906…”; other makers use their own formats. This number identifies the specific ECU as fitted to specific vehicles, and it’s one of the most useful identifiers when matching files.

Hardware vs software numbers

ECUs usually carry both a hardware number and a software number. The hardware number identifies the physical unit and its electronics; the software number identifies the calibration version loaded onto it. Two cars with the same hardware can run different software, which is exactly why both matter — the combination defines what’s actually in the box.

Hardware tells you the box; software tells you what’s running inside it. You need both to know what you’re dealing with.

The ECU family name

Alongside the numbers, you’ll often see a family name — EDC17, MED17, SID807, PCR2.1 and so on. This tells you the manufacturer’s platform and generation, which carries a lot of meaning: protection level, typical methods to read it, and the kind of maps inside. The family is shorthand that experienced tuners read instantly.

Supplier codes and markings

You may also see supplier markings, date codes and internal references. Not all of these matter for file work, but the manufacturer name, the hardware and software numbers, and the family designation are the core set worth noting and passing on. Together they pin down the unit with little ambiguity.
