Every field has its jargon, and ECU tuning has more than most. If you’ve ever felt lost in a sea of acronyms, here’s a plain-language glossary of the terms that come up most — a reference to keep handy.
The core file terms
ECU — Engine Control Unit, the computer that runs your engine. TCU — Transmission Control Unit, the gearbox’s computer. ORI — the original, unmodified file. MOD — the modified file. Full read / full backup — a complete copy of the ECU’s contents. Checksum — the integrity value that must be corrected after edits.
Reading and writing
OBD — reading via the diagnostic port. Bench — reading with the ECU removed. Boot / BDM / JTAG — deeper methods accessing the ECU’s internals. Flash — the main program/map memory. EEPROM — small memory holding identity and adaptation data. Bricked — an ECU left non-functional by a failed write.
Most tuning jargon is just shorthand. Once the acronyms click, the whole conversation gets a lot clearer.
Tuning terms
Stage 1 — software-only tune within factory hardware limits. Stage 2/3 — tunes requiring hardware changes. Map — a table in the calibration (fuelling, boost, timing). Damos / A2L — data describing a file’s map structure. Dyno — the machine that measures power and validates a tune.
Emissions terms
DPF / GPF / OPF — particulate filters (diesel/petrol). EGR — exhaust gas recirculation. SCR / AdBlue — NOx after-treatment. DTC — diagnostic trouble code. Restoration / back to factory — returning the ECU to its OEM state.
ECU families
EDC17 — Bosch diesel workhorse. MED17 — Bosch petrol equivalent. MG1 / MD1 — newer Bosch generation. SID / PCR / SIM — Continental/Siemens families. TPROT — Bosch protection levels.
The bottom line
