Bosch may be the biggest name in ECUs, but it’s far from the only one. Continental (which absorbed Siemens VDO) runs a large share of the market too, with its own families and naming. Here’s a guide to the Continental and Siemens ECUs you’ll encounter.
From Siemens to Continental
Many ECUs still referred to as “Siemens” come from Siemens VDO, which became part of Continental. So you’ll see both names attached to the same lineage. These units are common across PSA, Renault, Ford, VAG and others, and they use their own family designations distinct from Bosch’s.
The SID family (diesel)
SID (Siemens Diesel) units — names like SID807, SID208, SID310 — are Continental/Siemens diesel ECUs, found widely on PSA, Ford, Renault and Jaguar Land Rover diesels among others. They’re the Continental answer to Bosch’s EDC line, doing the same job of managing modern common-rail diesels and their emissions systems.
If it’s not a Bosch EDC, a modern diesel is very often running a Continental SID. Same job, different family.
The PCR and SIM families
On the VAG side, PCR2.1 is a well-known Continental diesel ECU used across a swathe of VW group diesels. On petrol, SIM family units (like SIMOS) appear across VAG petrol engines. Each has its own characteristics, protections and methods, just like the Bosch families — and each is well represented in the parc.
Why the maker matters
The ECU manufacturer and family shape everything downstream: how it’s read, how it’s protected, and what the maps look like inside. A Continental SID is approached differently from a Bosch EDC17. So identifying not just “diesel ECU” but the specific maker and family is what lets the right method and the right file come together.
The bottom line
Continental and Siemens ECUs — the SID diesels, PCR2.1, and the SIM petrol families — run a large share of the market alongside Bosch. Recognising these names and what they signify is part of correctly identifying any car that isn’t running a Bosch unit.
